Better nuclear reactors with the iPhone

new application available on the iPhone and the iPad can help researchers optimize current nuclear power plant operation and build better nuclear power plants in the future. This tool allows users to predict nuclear reactor performance by simulating reactor core activity, enabling researchers to evaluate new reactor designs with an interface that fits in their pocket (or purse).

Sad news is that this tool is not publically available, though a public version will be released soon.

This is definitely a cool, useful application. I’m actually glad it isn’t unleashed on the public through the App Store though. I’m sick of Apple/iPhone/iPad taking all the credit for developers’ hard work.

Ideally they’d open-source it and ensure cross-platform compatibility. Even keeping it proprietary and selling it on a shelf at Best Buy beats pimping the Apple banner by showing off cool software that Apple never had anything to do with. The news keeps focusing on the media instead of the message.
